Angela S., who runs a small gift shop with her mother, said she was approached by a campaign worker in what she described as “a friendly but firm tone.” When she declined the request for a $750 contribution, citing lack of cash flow, the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection showed up the following week.
- “They checked price tags, employee records, everything. It felt invasive—and unnecessary,” Angela said.
Marco B., a co-owner of a popular deli, alleges that after declining to sponsor a political “community BBQ” hosted by the councilwoman, his café was cited for improper sidewalk seating—even though they had a valid permit.
“It felt retaliatory,” Marco said. “We went from zero issues to three visits in two weeks. All because we didn’t want to be her ATM.”
Rosario A., owner of a family-run pawn shop for over 20 years, claims he was approached by a representative from the councilwoman’s office who “strongly encouraged” him to contribute $1,000 to a fundraising dinner. When he declined, citing slow business, Rosario says he was soon hit with a surprise Department of Buildings inspection.
“I’ve never had a violation in all my years,” Rosario said. “Suddenly they’re telling me I need permits for signage I’ve had since 2004!”
Manny D., owner of a Dollar Discount Store, a no-frills store serving low-income families in East Harlem, says he was visited by a local aide for the councilwoman just before the holidays. The aide asked if he could "support the community’s end-of-year celebration" with a $600 donation. Manny declined, explaining that his store was barely breaking even after a recent rent hike.
Two weeks later, Manny says, the Department of Sanitation issued a fine for “excess sidewalk clutter,” and a week after that, the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection fined him for not having Spanish-language signage posted—something he says had never been an issue before.
“It was like they were just looking for excuses to fine me,” Manny said. “I’ve been here 11 years and never had these problems until I said no to her people. It’s extortion, plain and simple.”
